Public Speaking for Children

When I was in secondary school I was so impressed at how good this Remove Class (from SJKC) girl can tell story in Malay so well. I still remember the title of her story “Si Luncai dengan Labu-labunya” and how she took out a hanky from her pocket and squeeze out the water from it.

Now I know how she can be that good. She was trained well by her teachers during her primary school years. How I know? My girls are studying in SJKC. During the BM and English week, the teachers will pick a few of them from each class to go up the stage to speak. Std 1 and 2 got a simple ones, like reciting short rhymes. Std 3 onwards will tell stories they memorises from the storybooks. The main intention is to get them up the stage to speak; public speaking.

I still remember how my eldest, then in Std 2 refused to participate in the Storytelling competition. Come Std 3, she was forced to participate and after that first experience, she wanted to do it again. She was nervous and yet excited about standing infront of others to speak. She did once in Malay and once in English.

Recently, her school was asked to send representative (Tahap 1 student) for inter-school Storytelling in Malay. Her teacher chose her classmate but she declined. My 9yo daughter told me that the moment her classmate declined she quickly raised up her hand to volunteer. I was very surprise to know what she did. Wow! My daughter is so brave. Even before the competition we are already proud of her.

Well, she did not win any price for her school but she gained much experience from it. We are still very proud of her. I heard there were about 50 students participated in the Storytelling competition and only 15 were chosen to go to the next stage.

We rewarded her by bringing her out for dinner. She chose dinner over gift coz she wants us to be treated too coz we helped her prepare for the competition. She is so thoughtful. Her school will reward her for participating too. :D

p/s: she does not allow me to upload her video during practice here. :(

Reading while Eating is a Bad Habit

belle reading

My eldest daughter, 9yo loves to read while she is eating. She told me that she enjoys her food better when she is reading. Unfortunately, eating while doing other activities is a bad habit. I read that, you will tend to eat more because when you read, you are too engross with the story that you don’t remember how much you have eaten. Now I know why my 9yo eats more lately! Must stop her from reading and eating at the same time! What about books mp3? Can listen while eating or not? I don’t think so eh. Respect your food! Give them your utmost attention. hehe. :)

Look, who picked up the bad habit…

Korean Drama Madness

While I was pregnant with my last baby, I got hooked watching Korean drama due to my hubby. He started it. One of our favourites at that time was Baby Faced Beauty. Then I stopped for a few months before and after giving birth to my 6th baby. Life is too hectic for me to be glued in front of the computer screen.

Lately I started again because my baby wants to latch very frequent. If I nurse him laying down, I will end up sleeping which I couldn’t at times coz I need to keep my ears open to hear what’s happening to my other 5 children.

So I switch on the PC and look for movies or drama to watch while he latches. At present, I am following Arang and the Magistrate, To The Beautiful You and Faith aka The Great Doctor. :D

Studying Medicine in Russia

One of my cousins wanted to study medicine but she did not get 4.0 in the recent STPM result. For a Malaysian Chinese, if you don’t get straight As, don’t hope to get any place in the local university to study medicine. Next option is to study in private medical colleges and that will cost quarter of a million ringgit for a degree. Thanks to Russia, you can study medicine for half the price and that is where my cousin is going in 5 months time; self sponsored though. I heard that she is going to use hers and her sibling’s education insurance to realise her dream of becoming a Pediatrician. That’s a good way since 2 of her siblings got full government scholarship studying in the local university here. If any of my children wants to study medicine, I don’t think their education insurance is enough to cover all the expenses, not even the wholesale life insurance that I got for myself. We need to sell our apartment then only can afford. ;)

Exam for 5yo Kindy

Yes! Exam is finally over and the school holiday is here for my Primary school girls. No holiday for my 5yo kindy though. Not only that, come Tuesday, he will have to sit for the mid term exam! His teachers even pasted in his Message book the exam scope. At first I planned to get him to do his revision after I am done coaching his sisters.

While I was going through his books yesterday, I felt so tired mentally. “Nah! Only 5yo what, why do you need to stress up yourself to get him to do revision?” I had enough with my 2 girls and I want a break too from teaching. My 5yo has no interest at all to do revision and I am not going to nag, bribe, reward or even scream at him to do it. He is only 5yo what. It is also no fun to know that his sisters are having holiday and he has to go to school and sit for exam some more!

Anyway, he and his 2nd sister went missing first thing in the morning. They quietly phoned their grandfather to fetch them to his house.

Exam Fever

The daughters having exam, the mother having exam fever! And the daughters are in Primary Two and One. They are ONLY in Primary One and Two. That’s why they need their mother to help and guide them to do revision for the exam. When they are older, they can kaotim by themselves. Correct or not? ;)

The are going to have their BM paper any moment now. I think we have covered all the topics that will be tested. Tomorrow, they will sit for the Chinese paper. Thank God today got Chinese tuition. I asked their tuition teacher to help them with the revision but they can’t do must within 2 hours.

I can’t sleep last night thinking about it. I slept at almost 3am! I think I got under eye dark circles already. I can’t sleep because I kept thinking about preparing additional Chinese exercise for my Primary One but I am not capable to do that coz I am a Banana Mommy remember. I should have bought more than just one exercise book. :(
